Waqas Khan offered a unique perspective on the evolving nature of existence, its meaning and individuality at this year’s Art Basel Hong Kong 2024

This year’s installment of Art Basel in Hong Kong stood out as a grand, vibrant, and immersive experience like never before.Renowned for its diverse representation of the Asia-Pacific art scene, Art Basel Hong Kong 2024 marked a triumphant return to its pre-Covid magnificence.

Despite recent challenges, including the implementation of a new security law in Hong Kong just days before the fair commenced, the event pulsated with energy and activity.Featuring a remarkable lineup of 242 exhibitors hailing from 40 countries and territories—up from 171 in 2023—the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center buzzed with excitement. Notably, there was a notable 37 percent increase in first-time galleries, attracting a multitude of collectors, art enthusiasts, gallerists, and VIPs eager to explore and be inspired.

The Encounters sector, dedicated to showcasing large-scale works, stole the spotlight with its exploration of the relationship between time and experience.

Among the standout pieces was Pakistani artist Waqas Khan’s mesmerizing minimalist ink-on-canvas creation, featuring striking blue hues and enigmatic shapes, which garnered attention and was acquired by Sabrina Amrani. The work was titled ‘Til we meet again’ which was intriguing for the viewers.

Waqas Khan, originally from Akhtarabad, Pakistan, is a prominent artist based in Lahore, Pakistan, where he both resides and creates his art. His expansive minimalist drawings, reminiscent of intricate webs and celestial realms, are characterized by a profound contemplative quality, leaving tangible imprints on paper.Employing a meticulous technique, Khan utilizes small dashes and minute dots to construct vast, intricate entanglements. Inspired by the concept of synchronization found in particle physics, his work reflects a profound sense of unity and interconnectedness, drawing from his affinity for literature and fascination with the lives of Sufi poets.

In addition to his visual artistry, Khan’s pieces often evoke a sense of narrative or script, fostering a dialogue between the artist and the viewer. This dialogue, while structured like a monologue, invites interpretation and engagement. Through his work, he offers a unique perspective on the evolving nature of existence and individuality.

With its vibrant atmosphere and captivating artworks, Art Basel Hong Kong 2024 reaffirmed its status as a pinnacle of the regional art market, leaving a lasting impression on attendees.
